Anxiety stemming from cultural sexism:
Growing up in an ethnic household, many of us have experienced cultural sexism. What is cultural sexism? Having traditional barbaric views of women, which they try to enforce, i.e. Women being the honour of the family. Some of the characteristics that they expect from women are: how to dress, restrictive personality development, lack of social life, and housewife expectations. This itself has led many young women to experience anxiety, due to the fear that that they aren’t good enough. A lot of immigrant parents have caused young people to mistake culture for religion, which ultimately misguides them. This issue is majorly concerning, considering the fact that Islam was the first religion to give women freedom and rights. This particular hadith combats such cultural expectations. “Treat women nicely, for a woman is created from a rib, and the most curved portion of the rib is its upper portion, so, if you should try to straighten it, it will break, but if you leave it as it is, it will remain crooked. So, treat women nicely.” Sahih Bukhari. Book 60, hadith no. 6.
